Martin Rioux-Lefebvre, senior program officer in NTI’s Nuclear Materials and Minimization program, delivered a keynote address on the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV) to the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the European Safeguards Research & Development Association (ESARDA) in Düsseldorf, Germany, this week.
Rioux-Lefebvre’s presentation focused on the history, structure, and ongoing activities of the IPNDV, a public-private partnership between the U.S. State Department and NTI, which brings together nuclear and non-nuclear weapon states to develop new procedures and concepts and to identify necessary technologies for monitoring and verifying nuclear weapons disarmament. The partnership’s first phase of work is addressing the most important, complex, and challenging topic related to future arms control reductions: monitoring and verifying the physical dismantlement of a nuclear warhead.
Corey Hinderstein, an NTI vice president, currently on leave to serve as Senior Coordinator for Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation Policy at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, also addressed the plenary about the role of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management.
ESARDA brings together European organizations involved in the research and development (R&D) of nuclear safeguards. Its annual meeting gathers leading professionals to discuss their research and recent developments in the field.
